How To Become A Maryland Notary Public
All new and renewing notary applicants must complete a notary public course of study. New notary public applicants must also pass the course examination. The Training Exchange, Inc. is authorized by the Maryland Secretary of State to provide the notary public course of study for those wishing to apply for their notary commission.
The course is self-paced and is designed to accommodate the busy schedules of learners. It does not have set class times or deadlines, allowing individuals to study and complete assignments at their own convenience. The course may last up to two hours, depending on your knowledge; however, you will have access to the online learning management system for 90 days.
To receive a certificate, you will be required to verify your identity at the start of the course. The most common ID types used in the verification process include a state issued driver's license or identification card or a government issued picture ID.
Steps for New Applicants
1. Take the Required Notary Education Course:- Maryland requires that all new notary public applicants complete a notary education course from an approved provider. The Training Exchange, Inc. is an approved provider. Once the course is completed, you will be issued a certificate of completion.
2. Pass the Notary Exam:- After completing the course, you must pass the course exam. Once successfully completed, you will be issued a certificate of passing.
3. Complete the online Notary Public Application and upload both your certificate of completion and your certificate of passing. You can find the online notary public application on the Maryland Secretary of State's website . You will not be able to complete your application until you have successfully completed the course and pass the exam.
Steps for Renewal Applicants
1. Take the Required Notary Education Course:- Maryland requires that all renewal notary public applicants complete a notary education course from an approved provider. The Training Exchange, Inc. is an approved provider. You can renew your notary commission 60 days before your current notary commission expires.
2. After completing the notary course of study, a completion certificate will be provided. There is no exam requirement for renewing applicants.
3. Complete the online Notary Public Application and upload your completion certificate. You can find the online notary public application on the Maryland Secretary of State's website . You will not be able to complete your application until you have successfully completed the course.
Approval Notification
- After submitting your application, you will be notified by email if your application has been approved.
- If approved, you will receive instructions on appearing before the Clerk of the Circuit Court.
- If you live out of state, you will likely be commissioned by the Clerk of the Circuit Court in the county in which you work.
- When being sworn in at the Clerk of the Circuit Court, you will be required to pay an $11 fee.
- A notary commission is valid for four (4) years.
Requirements and Eligibility
The Maryland Secretary of State - Notary Division is responsible for overseeing notary public commissions and ensuring that notaries public in Maryland adhere to the state's laws and regulations governing notarial acts. To be eligible to obtain your notary pubic commission:
- You must be at least 18 years old
- You must be of good moral character and integrity
- You must be a resident of Maryland or have a place of employment or practice in Maryland.
- You must be able to read and write in English.
- If living in the State, must be appointed by the senator representing the district in which you live; and if living outside the State, be a resident of a state that allows Maryland residents working in that state to serve as notaries public in that state
